Police registration in Colombo stopped by Tamil politicians

An operation launched by Sri Lanka police to collect information about citizens of Colombo has been suspended after opposition from Tamil political leaders.

“ Police have gone door to door with a form asking people to fill the details of the family members. I spoke to the President about this over the phone. And he agreed that it’s wrong to collect such information. And he promised me that he was going to give an order to the police to stop that immediately,” said leader of the Democratic People’s Front and Tamil Progressive Alliance, Mano Ganesan MP.

The police have given a leaflet to every house in the Wellawatta and Bambalapitiya areas, where the majority of Tamils live under the jurisdiction of the Colombo Municipal Council requesting all the residents to provide their details.

In protest, leader of the Tamil Progressive Alliance has raised the issue with the Minister of Public Security Tiran Alles, the Inspector General of Police, and the Secretary to President Saman Ekanayake.

“This is not a country run by the Police to get registered under the Police like that. It can happen in a special situation. If someone is breaking the law, they can identify who they are and arrest them.We don’t have an issue with that.”

Mano Ganesan has requested the citizens not to provide any information and register with the police.
