Drug trafficking on the rise in highly militarised north of Sri Lanka

A Tamil political organization has raised its concerns over drug trafficking in the northern province where government security forces are deployed heavily.

Within a short period of three months, ten drug related deaths have been reported from the North.
According to the local health authorities, about 140 drug dependants are currently being treated in a special unit at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

After a mother has given written notice to the Chunnakam police station disowning her 15 years old son heavily addicted to Heroine, the teenager was referred to the Achchulweli rehabilitation school by the juvenile court.

“Drug trafficking is spreading in a highly dangerous manner while a large army of one soldier to every ten civilians is deployed in the north. The military and police intelligence agencies turn a blind eye and doubts arise as to how these drugs are coming in,” said Leader of the Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front, Suresh Premachandran.

Speaking to the media about the drug menace affecting the youth in the northern province, the EPRLF leader points out that people are afraid to even reveal information about traffickers.

“When someone provides information, these drug traffickers immediately get to know about it. We don’t even know how that happens”

EPRLF Leader Premachnadran questions why the police and army intelligence services are not taking proper measures to stop this.

“ The youth in those areas are addicted to drugs and they tend to spend thousand of rupees on them. This hasled to a rise in thefts and robberies.”

The EPRLF leader belives that media coverage on punishments given for distribution, selling and use of drugs might help save youth from this danger.
