Talks between President and Tamils should have ‘international monitoring’

Relatives of forcibly disappeared Tamils emphasized the need for the international community to monitor the proposed discussions between President Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Tamil leaders.

“Tamil leaders who are going to talk to President Ranil Wickremesinghe, should remember his political history and what kind of a cunning politician he is. He is a man who has done so many things against the Tamil people,” said secretary of North-East Association of Relatives of Enforced Disappearances (ARED) G Rajkumar said,

Raj Kumar said this while speaking to journalists in Vavunia where the northern mothers have launched an ongoing struggle for almost 2100 days seeking justice for their loved ones who were forcibly disappeared by the government forces.

“Ranil, who was rejected by the Sinhala people, staged a drama to show that he supports the protest in Galle face grounds and sat on the president’s chair and used the army to attack the protestors.”

“During the ceasefire time period, he bribed Karuna Amman and destroyed our freedom struggle.”

The Secretary of the ARED pointed out that the Tamil leaders who are going to discuss with the President should remember that Ranil Wickramasinghe is also responsible for the destruction of property and the killing of 140,000 Tamils during the war.

“With the support of TNA, money was allocated from the budget to build 100 Sinhala-Buddhist temples in Tamil areas. It was Ranil who worked to get land from Tamil people to settle 4000 Sinhalese brought from outside in Nedunkarni, Vavuniya.”

The Secretary of the ARED accused President Wickremesinghe, who controls the Tamil majority North and East through a demerger, of giving the Hambantota port to China and paving the way for Chinese companies for sea urchin projects in Tamil areas.

“Every discussion that Sinhala leaders had with Tamil leaders was thrown into the dustbin. Tamil leaders should remember this part of the history too”
