“Lack of concern for locals, while national mourning for the Queen”

The Ranil Wickremesinghe has come in for sharp criticism for not declaring a day of national mourning in memory of those dead in the Easter day bombings while the same was declared to mourn the passing away of the British Queen.

Lawyers of the struggle, who supported the aragalaya protests which resulted in the ousting of the former president Gotabaya Rajapaksha questioned the stand of the government in declaring a day of national mourning for the Queen under whom Sri Lanka was a colony, while 269 people died during the deadly Easter day bombings

Manoj Nanayakkara, organiser of the Lawyers of the struggle at a media briefing in Colombo accused president Ranil Wickremesinghe of not honouring his commitment to rendering justice to the victims of those dead during the deadly bombings that happened on Easter day in 2019.

“The President has gone to Britain; improving diplomatic relations is a good thing. A national holiday has been declared and flags flew at half-mast and national mourning observed. However, the President did not realise the pain when 269 people were killed on Easter day when he was the Prime Minister. The present concern and thinking were not there at that time, they didn’t bother to declare a day of national mourning, however, a day of national mourning was declared on the funeral day of the British Queen who had enslaved us”.

The nation was told only of ‘stories’ including even a report from the London Metropolitan Police referred to as ‘Scotland Yard’, who suggested it to be investigated again he further added.

“You should need a large heart to remember and mourn those dead in a pool of blood, hence please render justice to those victims of the Easter day bombings. Let there not be any further delay in this” emphasised Manoj Nanayakkara.
