The head of an independent commission’s presence at the airport has been heavily criticised in the social media. He had come to welcome the chief organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) party, who migrated in the wake of the people’s struggle and returned back to the island.
After staying for more than two months in the USA, Basil Rohana Rajapaksa returned back to Sri Lanka via Dubai in E.K-650 Emirates aircraft on 20th of November, Sunday morning. Among the representatives of the SLPP party, the presence of the head of the National police commission, Chandra Fernando was caught by the cameras of the journalists who were at the airport awaiting the arrival of Basil Rajapaksa.
The presence of the chairperson of the National police commission, Chandra Fernando at the airport stirred questions regarding the independence of the commission.
Basil Rajapaksa who holds a dual citizenship left the country on the 9th of September in the wake of the people’s protest which overthrew the Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and his government from power.
He resigned from his ministerial position on the 9th of June.
The general secretary of SLPP, Lawyer Sagara Kariyawasam stated to the media that with the arrival of Basil Rajapakasa, the party plans on the forthcoming elections are expected to be implemented.
As Ranil Wickremesinghe became the President through the votes of the parliamentarians from the SLPP, some suspect whether Chandra Fernando visited Basil Rajapaksa with the consent of his superiors.
Later the police commission chair had told that he went to check on the commotion at the airport.
